Woodstock (original image)

Ungraded 2022 mounted on a stretched Canvas Frame. In 1970 while in college in Madison the version of Woodstock I knew was by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. This song was on their album Déjà vu, a favorite album of mine. Their music confirmed my taste preference for the melodic style of Rock music . For this artwork I choose to go with the original version by Joni Mitchell that I only learned of recently.

J S Bach Minuet in B minor BWV 1067

Music Box CS 2020: J.S. Bach- Suite No.2 in B minor, BWV 1067: Menuet mvt. 6. This song is short so it repeats all parts, I like the Tempo of this version. I picked this minuet for its simplicity and because the entire song has a number of “hooks.” that kept my interest.

Like A Rock 2018

Like a Rock is a small work, 30 inches by eight. My choice of brown and black fits the classic rock look seen in the images of Bob Seger. The colors silver and gold are also a good choice that you can see in these album covers:

Upgraded 2022 mounted on a stretched canvas frame. The original artwork is dated 2020. This may be the first of my artworks where my arrangement of the music greatly changed the look of the artwork. For example, this Bach music is for a solo Cello. My arrangement adds other instruments including drums.

Music Box CS 2021: This image shows my graffiti words from the song, on top of Prussian Blue topcoat, that I then scrapped away to review the base paint.

2021 ≈ L72"x46"xD4" When standing back from the artwork and seeing the words, the thought came to me: I was looking at graffiti.

After the Gold Rush

Music Box CS 2021: This melody is a classic rock artwork. The lyrics tell a disjointed (poetic?) story I find hard to follow. Although the meaning of the words are cloudy , the strength exists in the melody that pulls the song together. This style of this music is country/folk rock 'n' roll, with a touch of Gospel. The results are lyrics that are haunting, although I don't know why.

Mozart Serenade No. 13

Music Box CS 2018: With this mini artwork I can see that I am under the influence of the earlier artwork, also a Mozart piece, Rondo Alla Turca. In past mini artworks my notes would be all one color and the stems all a gray, but with this project it is all about color diversity.

Mozart Sonata No.11 Turkish Rondo 2018

Music CD CS 2018: This is one of the earliest music boxes. Before this artwork I thought that 230-year-old Classical Music needed to be painted black and brown. Maybe this came from looking at Mozart’s manuscripts. This music is also known as the Turkish March, the translation of Alla Turca. I used brighter colors once I listened to the astonishing speed of this music. Rondo refers to music that is to be played fast.

Music Box CS 2017: So What, consists of 9 canvases for a length 70 inches. The largest canvases are only eight by ten inches. I am looking at this artwork to be a directional changed. Once again, I am on the move with the inspiration being Jackson Pollock and his abstract painting Blue Poles.

Where Have All The Flowers Gone

Music Box CS 2019: This music is one of my greatest hits, from the Early Years. I am guessing, but I believe it was the Kingston Trio version of this song that created my connection.

Satisfaction 2017

My first contact with the music of the Rolling Stones was their early album from 1965 that my brother bought: December's Children. On this album where two memorable songs, for me, As Tears go By, and Get Off my Cloud. That turned out to be the last Rolling Stones album I held in my hand. As I have mentioned, I was a Beatles fan in the sixties.

Stairway two Heaven 2017

This artwork Stairway to Heaven, is composed of three canvases 56 inches in length by 24 inches. Over the years I have considered, but never felt convinced, to paint this great rock classic song, or any other music by Led Zeppelin. I now realize that this avoidance reaches back to the day that my musical connection became personnel. I was a sophomore in high school and on Sunday, February 9th 1964, the Beatles, made their first black and white television American appearance, on the Ed Sullivan show.

In this video Billie Holiday sings, accompanied by Ben Webster, Lester Young and Coleman Hawkins, Vic Dickenson, Gerry Mulligan, Roy Eldridge, Doc Cheatham, Danny Barker, Milt Hinton, and Osie Johnson. Embraceable You 2015

I liked the upbeat version of Embraceable You from the 1943 movie Girl Crazy sung by a young Judy Garland. This artwork comprises four canvas panels over sixty-four inches and is larger than planned. My decision to add extra words increases the artwork’s size.

Take Five is classic music by Dave Brubeck, that I originally painted early in my music career, back in 2006. I made this version as a gift to the University of Wisconsin Marathon music department.

Up On The Roof 2013

Sold artwork. I like this music. I think over time that the music holds well. The words say something that many people can relate to, and the melody is catchy. Finally, the timing was right. This song played on iTunes, and I became curious about it. I learned that Carole King, another old favorite of mine, co-wrote it.

Commissioned Artwork: Since this is a 80's music I thought I would start this work using a color pallet from that time. When I think of the eighties colors like Mauve, Seaform green, Plum, Harvest gold, and Cerulean blue, pop up. This artwork does not have a totally nostalgic look, for I am kind-of a color wanderer.

From the Blog: Cherish, is a wonderful song about unrequited love, that made it relevant in the 60’s and I believe it still holds today. That is one reason I painted it. Many of my artworks I complete reflect the times I grow up. Cherish is one of those 3 minute songs that have given hundreds of hours of remembrance, and reflection to many of us. Sometimes it is good to look back, laugh at yourself, and realize how far you have come. You envy your youth in those days, but know that the best is yet to come. This artwork comprises two canvases 15 inches by 60 inches in length.

Of the different versions of this song this one written my Franz Schubert probably is the most well know, sung by the soprano singer Maria Callas. That is not the version used for this painting. I prefer this aria of Ave Maria composed by Vladimir Vavilov in 1970, and attributed later to Guido Caccini:

Back in the early 2000s, working at Best Buy, and going to school, I heard what I thought was this music playing on a Best Buy promotional CD. In 2017, I painted this music but soon realized that I had the wrong country song. On that long ago Best Buy promotional CD the song I remembered was actually I’m Already There, by Lonestar.

The painting consists of three panels with a height of about 25 1/2 inches, by about forty-six inches in length.

This music was released in 1989. The 80's where a time that I was busy so my appreciation of music was hit and miss. The only music I am sure to remember, from that time, came from Prince and Madonna. That sums up the 80's. I heard Adele's 2011 release of Love Song, it sounded familiar, but I did not know why.

In The Mood 2017

n the Mood, is a big band classic from Glen Miller & his Orchestra. This song topped the charts for 13 weeks in 1940. I remember playing my Mom's 33 1/3 albums on the console record player when I was young. That is when I first heard the big band music, of Glen Miller, and Tommy Dorsey.

Bach Chaconne 2017

This Bach melody seems to have been cutting-edge in its time which fits well with the many experimental styles of Miles Davis. Chaconne uses a support canvas that is only is eight inches by twenty-four in lengt`h.
